Since the production of large sheet glass became possible at the beginning of the 20th century, transparency has become a hallmark of modern architecture. The disadvantages, however, became obvious from the start: heat build-up and loss. Both the energy crises of the 1970s and the rapidly growing sensitivity to energy and ecological problems called for new and better solutions in architecture and structural engineering. This work presents an overview of international glass production for building and construction purposes. It shows the most innovative and technically advanced solutions, and presents a range of working examples in the architecture and design work of Foster, Ritchie, Francis, Grimshaw, Rogers, Ingenhoven, Nouvel, Coenen et al. The book should be of interest to architects, structural engineers, facade experts, as well as those in the engineering fields of heating and air-conditioning.
